Trouble in sight? What occupational therapists need to know to identify post-concussion vision issues

Presented by Stephanie Schurr

Occupational therapists working with clients after concussion are familiar with common symptoms such as headache, light sensitivity, poor concentration and mental fatigue that interfere with our clients’ return to meaningful activity.  Although we may suspect that these symptoms are related to problems with our clients’ visual systems, many therapists are unsure of what can be done to identify the clients in need of a comprehensive binocular vision assessment, and where to refer for help.

This webinar will discuss a 30-minute screening battery that was recently used by an occupational therapist in a study to differentiate concussion survivors with and without vision concerns.  The most common post-concussion vision disorders will be described and quick screening tools that can help therapists identify clients in need of a more comprehensive vision assessment will be shared.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define common post-concussion vision disorders such as convergence insufficiency, accommodative disorder, and saccadic dysfunction.
  2. Recognize the relationship between vision signs and symptoms and difficulties with occupational performance.
  3. Identify at least two avenues to find an optometrist offering binocular vision assessment in their geographic region.
