Title
Occupational therapy in chronic fatigue syndrome: Understanding and practical applications (April 2, 2024)
Description

Presented by: Zara Dureno

Approximately 600,000 Canadians have myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS; Muirhead, 2021). People living with ME/CFS experience significant negative impacts on occupational participation, including loss of meaningful occupations and contextual barriers to participation (Bartlett et al., 2021). Occupational therapists have a key role in promoting occupational participation for people living with ME/CFS by identifying barriers to occupational participation, supporting the development of practical strategies, and advocating for accommodations (Chu et al., 2020).

This webinar will provide an overview of the current science and understanding of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The role of occupational therapy in ME/CFS management will be explored. Specific practical strategies, including pacing, to use with clients with ME/CFS will be discussed.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the biological mechanisms of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
  2. Support client’s self-management of specific symptoms related to this condition.
  3. Compare and contrast typical pacing strategies with pacing strategies for ME/CFS.
