Sharpe OT Services Inc. in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, BC is looking for an experienced, energetic and dynamic pediatric Occupational Therapist to join our team full-time, for 2 years in a physically active role (lots of moving!).

Start date: ideally June 1, 2019 (with subsequent time off July 1-Aug 5th/19).

Note: Offering us a shorter time commitment (<2 years) will be detrimental to our clients who form strong attachments to their therapist from working regularly together over a long period of time. Our referral sources and community contacts also expect there to be long-term stability in our staff.

Position may also be well suited to a new graduate with a dedication to pediatric population, and willingness to work hard in order to access and implement the many practices our team incorporates in our intervention. It would be a steep learning curve, which we are willing to support, for a candidate who has demonstrated excellence in their endeavours to date.

The position is focused on direct therapy with children 1:1 and in small groups, at our 2 locations (one of which is a therapy gym) and may also include working within families’ homes, pools, and the community.

If you like a busy workplace, are efficient and organized, feel energized when spending time with kids with special needs, and are excited to learn evidence based practices to effectively serve this population, this position is for you!

Sharpe OT Services Inc. offers its employees:
  • Competitive salary, based on experience and attributes of the applicant
  • Ability to buy-in to a group benefits package after 3 months employment,
  • 2 weeks of paid vacation/year
  • 7 weeks of unpaid vacation/year (5 week shutdown in summer, 2 weeks at Christmas) towards which employees build compensatory time off (to make shut down periods a % of paid time based on hours banked in busy season),
  • Professional development budget (with paid time for 50% of the hours of the course, to a max # of days/year)
  • Compensation for work-related kms throughout the work day
  • A variety of ‘self care’ and ‘team’ events to promote collegial relationships
  • An incentive structure whereby therapists who are highly productive (implement more direct therapy sessions) earn increases in paid time off
  • A supportive work environment where everyone has a ‘learner’s mindset’
  • Professional photography, business cards, cotton work shirts (with collar)
  • Access to an electric business vehicle (for employees with DL for 10 years)

Sharpe OT Services Inc. is a well established business with a strong resource and equipment cabinet to draw from (including a climbing wall and suspended apparatus, parent viewing room, established intake policies/practices, etc.) and solid mentorship to serve a stable, diverse client base. We are also well connected with a variety of multi-disciplinary community teams.

A percentage of our clientele are:
  • Indigenous; and thus the ability to work with cultural sensitivity is required
  • Highly anxious; thus demonstrated ability to establish rapport, have clients connect to you, and ensure clients/caregivers feel at ease will be expected

The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning and implementation of individualized Occupational Therapy programming for a caseload of 30-35 clients, and will be expected to be directly involved with clients for 50-75% of their hours of employment. The business model is based upon the ability of the therapists to maintain this productivity level, which ensures our clients receive maximum face to face time for their therapy budgets. This model is commonly achieved in other countries and applicants will be expected to reflect upon how this set-up (which is quite unique in Canada) matches or does not match their own characteristics and current personal needs. What strategies would you use, personally, to thrive at work?

  • Our operations take place over many sites, and thus the ability to process high volumes of written information (email, post it notes, etc.) and respond effectively, in writing, a timely manner (touch typing) is essential. Staff must:

  • Be outstandingly organized in day to day schedule and management of physical resources and time (4-6 client appointments per day)
  • Efficiently review a large amount of background information and previous chart notes, creating a relevant analysis and targeted outcomes
  • Review and adhere to all policies and procedures in our Operations Manual to ensure consistent approaches and practices within our team
  • Be eager to receive and process constructive feedback regularly, and implement changes accordingly, in order to improve your professional practice and our team’s work (view feedback as a process to grow from)
  • Check all email and respond within 24-48 hours; be available by text within 5 min throughout the work day (urgent communications arise)
  • Spend short durations online during one’s ‘time off’ is expected in order to stay current on urgent scheduling/programming details (email)
  • Innovate and create new approaches to achieve intervention goals

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered member, in good standing, with the College of OTs of BC (COTBC) - annual fees will be paid for, for the successful candidate
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to personal vehicle
  • Experience working with preschool and school-aged children with special needs; experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collectively with an extremely dedicated (and fun!) group of individuals
  • Physical ability to meet the job demands (adjustment of suspended apparatus and moving of some pieces of heavy equipment)
