Sexual difficulties following a stroke and implications for occupational therapists (April 21, 2020)

Presented by Louis-Pierre Auger

Sexual difficulties (e.g. erectile dysfunctions, joint pain, lack of motor coordination) are present in approximately 50% of persons who sustained a stroke. Considering the importance of sexuality for quality of life and that occupational therapists are specialists of enabling their clients in significant activities, it is important for them to be as knowledgeable as possible regarding the subject of sexuality.

This webinar will review the impacts that sexuality has on stroke, as well as the expectations and needs of stroke clients regarding sexuality and rehabilitation. Tips and cues on ways to address sexuality will be highlighted. This webinar will also describe evidence-based assessments and interventions that could be used by occupational therapists for sexual rehabilitation following a stroke.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Know the impact of a stroke on the clients’ sexuality.
  2. Be aware of ways that could ease the inclusion of sexuality in their daily practice.
  3. Understand what are the current evidence-based practices in sexual rehabilitation following a stroke.
