The role of occupational therapists in infant sleep education (April 14, 2020)

Presented by Heather Boyd

Families with infants often struggle with sleep, and conventional sleep consultants rarely address medical and health contributors to sleep challenges.  Occupational therapists can assess and address sleep challenges within developmental, environmental, and biological perspectives using evidence and an occupational therapy framework to support infant sleep development and maternal mental health.

This webinar will identify how to discern typical sleep development from underlying infant sleep challenges. Approaches for educating and supporting parents, changing parent perception and the environment (parenting approach, and physical environment) and identifying medical issues will be explored. Occupational therapists will apply evidence and the Person-Environment-Occupation model (Law et al., 1996) to infant sleep challenges.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand typical sleep development milestones and health contributors to poor infant sleep.
  2. Identify evidence-based parental and environmental factors that support sleep development.
  3. Be able to apply the Person-Environment-Occupation model (Law et al., 1996) to assess infant sleep challenges.
