Trauma and mindfulness: What occupational therapy practitioners need to know (March 17, 2020)

Presented by Donna Costa

Many occupational therapy practitioners are using mindfulness with their clients in a variety of practice settings. Research has emerged about a variety of adverse effects during contemplative experiences, particularly in those with trauma histories. Because of the high incidence of trauma in individuals, it is imperative that occupational therapists who utilize mindfulness in their practice understand both trauma-informed care and trauma sensitive mindfulness.

This webinar will review the incidence of trauma, the research on adverse experiences, signs and symptoms to look for, and what to do if a client encounters difficulty during mindfulness. Resources from the Safety Toolbox will be shared.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the specific competencies required for leading mindfulness-based interventions within occupational therapy practice.
  2. Recognize the symptoms that might occur in individuals with trauma histories during mindfulness sessions.
  3. List the safety measures to be utilized with trauma-sensitive mindfulness practice.
