Behaviour activation: Quick and effective ways to engage clients with depression (March 3, 2020)

Presented by Theresa Straathof

Client engagement is the first essential step to proceeding with functional assessment and interventions but it’s not uncommon to meet clients who do not want to take part.  This behaviour can be interpreted as “being difficult”, “uncooperative”, “stuck” or “unmotivated”. When issues like depression, anxiety, pain, or low energy interfere with participation, the occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant needs strategies to help the client initiate occupations.

This webinar will provide an overview of strategies to make interventions meaningful to the client and assist the client to cope with their challenges, thereby facilitating the client’s engagement in occupation. Key coping strategies for the client to work on to facilitate their recovery will be provided using examples of learning modules from the publication Coping Strategies to Promote Occupational Engagement and Recovery (McNamara & Straathof, 2017). A module to train clients on the concepts of behaviour activation will be included as a handout.

Please note that access to the publication is not required to participate in this webinar.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify six essential methods to promote activation and decrease avoidance.
  2. Describe the role of four coping categories in occupational engagement.
  3. Explain four elements to foster client buy-in for intervention.
