Seating and wheeled mobility: Considerations for long-term care settings

Presenter: Jill Sparacio

The goal of occupational therapy in long-term care settings is to improve one’s ability to have greater participation in “occupation”, specifically maintaining and improving their ability to participate in daily life tasks. This webinar is designed to provide basic information for occupational therapists working in long-term care settings regarding seating and wheeled mobility. The focus will be on the impact of destructive postural alignment in terms of body systems function as well as the ability to participate in functional daily tasks. Simple solutions will be discussed to compensate for these postural asymmetries that are affordable and are designed for multiple client use.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the 3 common destructive postural patterns seen in individuals in long-term care.
  2. Identify the impact of these destructive postures on at least one body system.
  3. Apply 3 simple solutions to accommodate destructive postures through low cost seating options.
