Community mobility is essential for social participation and integration in society, as well as quality of life. For individuals with physical limitations who do not drive or have access to adapted transportation, access to public transportation becomes essential for community participation. Occupational therapists can play an important role in advocating for accessible public transportation for clients who have physical disability and in supporting safe use of public transportation to increase their community participation.
This webinar discusses the issues related to accessing public transportation for clients who have physical disability. Available information on existing evaluations and programs will serve as a basis for a reflection on the role that occupational therapists can play in this area. This includes advocacy for accessible public transportation and supporting clients in developing skills and finding strategies to facilitate their use of public transportation while overcoming the barriers to their mobility needs in the community.
After participating in this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the facilitators and barriers to accessing public transportation for individuals with physical disability
2. Recognize the role that occupational therapists can play in this area.
3. Identify interventions or strategies that can be provided to support clients with physical disability in the use of public transportation.
