Enriching Occupational Therapy Practice with Occupational Science

The overall aim of this one-day workshop is to inspire occupational therapists in clinical practice with major contributions from occupational science. It will situate occupational science within occupational therapy history and its influence and examine more closely fundamental occupational therapy concepts with a scientific eye. Participants will learn about latest evidence, evaluation tools and interventions about the following concepts: engagement in occupations; life balance; boredom; occupational meaning. This workshop is an opportunity for occupational therapists to reflect on and share about their practice and have hands-on experience with several assessment tools.

Day 1

 

  • Situating occupational science within occupational therapy history

  • Definition of occupational science

  • Occupational science contributions that can inspire occupational therapy practice: Understanding occupational challenges beyond performance and autonomy

  • Engagement in occupations: definition, evidence (with health and well-being), evaluation and intervention

  • Life balance: definition, evidence (with health and well-being), evaluation and intervention

  • Boredom: definition, evidence (with health and well-being), evaluation and intervention

  • Meaning in occupations: definition, evidence (with health and well-being), evaluation and intervention

     

    Goals and Learning Objectives:

     

    After taking part in this workshop, participants will:

     

    1. Understand the contributions from occupational science.

    2. Be aware of evidence-informed knowledge on fundamental occupational therapy concepts, such as engagement, life balance, boredom and meaning.

    3. Be able to apply several evaluation tools on engagement, life balance, boredom and meaning.

 

Target Audience:

Any occupational therapist or student in occupational therapy program. Occupational therapists with more than 5 years of experience who have been less exposed to occupational science may obtain particular benefit from this workshop.

Presenter:

Nadine Larivière is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Occupational Therapy program at l’Université de Sherbrooke. She is a researcher at l’Institut universitaire en santé et services sociaux du Centre intégré universitaire en santé et services sociaux (CIUSSS) de l'Estrie-CHUS and an associate researcher at the Centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal. Her main current research interests concern the functional impact and occupational challenges lived by persons with borderline personality disorders, including work participation. She currently conducts studies on translation and validation of assessment tools and interventions on life balance and engagement in meaningful activities. She has given this workshop on several occasions in Quebec and in France to practicing occupational therapists and occupational therapy students.
