Driving to Recovery: Assessment of Fitness to Drive for Acquired Brain Injury

Register online by January, 30th 2018 - 02/06/2018

Presenter: Keith McWilliams

Between 40% and 60% of people with moderate to severe brain injuries return to driving after their injury (Novak and Lopez, 2015). It is critical that occupational therapists properly evaluate and discuss options of community mobility prior to discharge from any setting. Driving is often overlooked or met with the assumption that it is understood driving is not an option. However, there is limited research that supports generalizability of assessment tools (Classen et al., 2009). Occupational therapists are met with the challenge of continuing to seek development and implementation of evidence based protocols for assessment of fitness to drive.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will:

  1. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the relationship between clinical evaluation and on road assessment for driver rehabilitation in Acquired Brain Injury population.
  2. Participants will gain knowledge regarding pre-driving screening for the occupational therapy generalist.
  3. Participants will explore tools utilized with brain injury population as predictors of fitness to drive.
